From Marilyn Monroe’s red lips to Audrey Hepburn’s eyelashes, these female icons knew how to make a lasting impression. However, makeup has come a long way since these iconic movie stars graced the screens. While we’ve learned a lot from them over the years, we have also developed ways that makeup works for us to create everyday makeup looks that work for almost any setting.
1. The no-makeup look
While it might seem a little silly, this is a simple makeup look that is easy to pull off. You’ll use makeup to accentuate your positive points (think thick lashes, full lips, etc.), but you won’t look overdone.
Try to get a foundation that best matches your skin tone. Instead of testing colors on your inner wrist, try testing new foundation colors on your jaw line and then head towards the natural light. Department store lights don’t complement skin tones and people often look different outside than they do inside. You’ll see the color ranges best in the sun.
To keep this look simple, go for muted tones such as a brown eyeliner, clear lip gloss and a pale pink blush for an easy make up look.
2. The subtle smoky eye
A night out on the town can be even more dramatic thanks to the smoky eye. While this seems like a complex style, it’s actually a simple makeup look that can be glamorous at the same time. Try using metallic colors, such as a silver eyeliner or gold eye shadow, to help darken the eyes without overdoing it. You don’t want to look like you have a black eye, just a subtle, classic look.
3. The red lip
The great thing about the red lip is that it can be worn night or day. If the idea of a bold lip scares you, try experimenting to find which shade looks best with your skin tone. Sometimes, colors with underlying blues look better on people than an orange or coral-tinged red might look. Most makeup stores are happy to help you test colors to see what works. Just check with a beauty consultant before you start popping open lipstick tubes.
Also make sure your lips are moisturized so the color lasts long and doesn’t dry your lips out. After applying one coat of lipstick, pucker your lips between a tissue and then reapply. The color will absorb deeper and last longer.
4. Luscious eyebrows
As a fairly new look, thick eyebrows are making a comeback with everyday makeup looks. The easiest way to make eyebrows stand out is to fill them in a little. Try going with an eye shadow color or pencil that best matches your eyebrow hair color. Fill it in lightly, making small, even strokes so you don’t overdo it. This bold look is a great way to incorporate something different into your simple makeup looks.
Whether you want to accentuate one feature or create a look that works for both the office and downtown, try these simple makeup looks the next time you want to brighten up your face.
